1.9 Family Experience Story/Resources

THIS WEEK, we continue our January Family Experience series, UNBOXED.

We invite you to join us on our YouTube channel (Canyon Creek Project) or Facebook live for Family Experience every Saturday at 11AM. Experience worship as a family through praising with your voice and watching and listening to the weekly lesson come alive!

“With the holiday season having just passed by, most kids still have the concept of giving and receiving gifts fresh on their minds. While many, if not all, of the gifts that were unboxed at Christmas will eventually fall into disrepair, gifts given by God will never fade! Through this “Unboxed” series, kids will discover what kinds of gifts those are, starting with the fact that everyone has special gifts! Then they will see how God can use those gifts to help others, among those gifts being special blessings from God, as well. Our gifts help us care about what God cares about, by focusing on heavenly things, and we can trust God with our gifts when we offer it up cheerfully!”

January 9: “God uses my gifts to help others.”

The Body of Christ: 1 Corinthians 12:12-31

Memory Verse:

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others.” 1 Peter 4:10

Experience this lesson through family worship:

Activity 1: The Big Picture

* INSTRUCTIONS: Lay out a piece of butcher paper large enough to draw an outline of each family member. Use markers to add details to the outline, such as eyes, eyelashes, ears, a nose, hair, etc. This is a team effort!

* “Each of you used what you had to help create the big picture! God gave everyone different gifts. But that doesn't mean that my gift is better than yours. Your gift is not better than your friends. Every gift is good and important! The Bible tells us to look at our own body. Our bodies are made up of many different parts! See bible text 1 Corinthians 12:12-31

Activity 2: Sketch a Scene

* INSTRUCTIONS: Give each family member a paper with a hand-drawn picture frame on it. Encourage the each person to think about a time when someone else helped them. Maybe it was their mom or dad, a brother or sister, a friend, or a teacher. Tell them to draw a picture to show how someone else helped them.

* God uses our gifts to help others, and God also uses other people’s gifts to help us.

* Remember how we are all parts of the same body? We all need each other. God made us to work together and help each other.

UNBOXED

January 2: “Everyone has special gifts”

Spiritual Gifts: 1 Corinthians 12:1-11

Memory Verse:

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others.” 1 Peter 4:10

Experience this lesson through family worship:

Activity 1: Made with Gifts

  • INSTRUCTIONSGet sticky notes in assorted colors and give a few of each color to each family member. Then when you say go, have each family member go around and put sticky notes on each other!

  • “Look around! Is there anyone who doesn't have a sticky note on them? No! Just like how everyone has special gifts from God!”

Activity 2: Hot Potato Gift Edition

  • INSTRUCTIONSLike the game, Hot Potato, your family is going to pass around a gift-wrapped box to show that sometimes we get a gift and sometimes we give a gift away. Make sure the kids pass the gift nicely. Play music as the kids pass the box and stop it occasionally. Whoever is holding the box when the music stops is out of the game. Repeat until there is a winner. To take this activity to the next level, consider putting little treats or toys in the box. The winner gets to pass it out to everyone! Or, each time the music stops, whoever is holding the box gets a gift before they are out of the game.

  • There are two ways we use gifts. We can either give them to someone or we can get a gift from someone.

  • Have you ever given someone a gift?

Lets make a map of our schools, our home, our church, or even the way we get from our home to our favorite store.

Family Worship Activity:

Do something courageous with your kids this week. Some ideas are a simple trust fall on your couch or something bigger, like a really tall slide at the park. You know your children best; so choose something that they’re slightly afraid to do- and do it with them. Make the connection that you are with them to help calm their fears. God is like that too. He calms our fears and helps us not be afraid just like he did for David. Read 1 Samuel 21:10-22:2 and Psalm 56 together.

11.21 Family Experience Bible Story

This week in our FAMILY EXPERIENCE BIBLE STORY video, we continue our series, SING! Giving God Praise, which focuses on the book of Psalms! We learn that I AM FORGIVEN BECAUSE GOD LOVES ME.

You will need:

A bar of soap

Paper

Scissors

Something to draw with

Tape

Super Soap
:

Draw the outline of a person on a piece of paper.  Discuss how sin (the wrong choices that we make) clouds up our hearts and separate us from God. Ask your child to provide examples of sins and then write the name of the sin on the figure. Explain that God's forgiveness, through Jesus, is like super soap that washes away our sins when we are truly sorry and ask forgiveness. Decorate a bar of soap using a piece of paper decorated with stamps, crayons, stickers, or markers.  Tape the label on the soap to finish.

Family Worship Activity:

Have a bubble party this week! Spend a good amount of time blowing bubbles with your family. Then have everyone sit and watch while one-person blow the bubbles. Let’s watch what happens when we blow a bubble. Watch as it floats in the air and then pops! That helps us understand what happens when we pray to God and ask God to forgive our sins. God forgives us and it’s gone!!! Just like a bubble pops and is instantly gone, you are instantly forgiven because God loves you!

https://www.origami-resource-center.com/chinese-lantern.html

Family Worship Activity:

As a family, play follow the leader. Give each person the chance to be “the leader”. The leader will choose an action and the rest of the family will follow. Explain that it’s fun to be the leader. The best leader we have is God and we should always follow that God tells us to do. We can be confident when God is our leader. The bible tells us so- Read Psalm 119:101-105 together.

Let them try…Make sure they don’t hurt themselves or run into anything. Stop them after a few moments and say “great try!” Then, try again, but this time lead them by verbal step by step directions. Make the connection that “it’s so much easier when Im guiding you, isn’t it? I was watching over you the entire time to make sure you didn’t get hurt and you knew the right way to go. Jesus does that too. He watches over us and makes sure we are always safe.”

10.31 Family Experience Bible Story

This week in our FAMILY EXPERIENCE BIBLE STORY video, we begin our new series, SING! Giving God Praise, which focuses on the book of Psalms! We learn that I AM WONDERFUL BECAUSE GOD MADE ME.

You may notice that our video this week is a little bit shorter than our past videos - that is because we have expanded our in-person Family Experience Worship time to make it more meaningful and interactive for you and your families (and shortened the video segment by a few minutes). Amazed- Week 4- “God Does Amazing Things!”

Family Worship Coloring sheet and activity:
Fireworks in a Jar
Materials:
a bowl
cooking oil
watercolor paint color
measuring spoons
a jar
water

In a bowl pour two to three tablespoons of cooking oil. Add 3-5 drops of watercolor paint color. Use a spoon to stir the paint into the oil. The 1 will not mix, but stirring will help to break the paint apart. Then, carefully pour the oil into a jar of water. The oil will settle at the top of the jar after a minute. The watercolors, however will actually begin to shoot down, slowly mixing into the water to create a “fireworks” effect! The watercolors will continue to shoot down like fireworks until all of the paint has fallen from the oil. Just like our “fireworks” are pretty amazing—God is even MORE amazing!

Family Worship Activity:
Play a game of ‘true or false’ with your families. Use stories of Jesus doing amazing things like;
True or False;
- Jesus walked on water
- Jesus fed 5000 people with just 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish
- God created the world and all the animals
- Jesus healed a man who couldn’t walk
Then include some amazing things that God is doing for your family.
Make the point that we can know that God is amazing by looking at all He has done and is doing.

10.17 Family Experience Live!

This week in our FAMILY EXPERIENCE LIVE video, we continue our new series, AMAZED: God of Miracles, which focuses on the life of the prophet, Elijah! We learn that GOD SPEAKS TO ME and hear a surprising story about a time when God spoke to Elijah in a very unexpected way.

Gather your families around this week and make super easy megaphones out of rolled up construction paper. Have each person whisper into their megaphone truths from our bible lesson (while the others practice listening) –
Example of Bible truths you can use:
* God is amazing

* God speaks to me

* God isn’t in the earthquake, wind, or fire- he’s in a whisper

* I am not alone!

* God provides!

* Deuteronomy 7:21
Then make the connection that God is always making effort to speak to us- we need only to listen.

Family Worship Craft:

Brown or grey paint

Family Worship Activity:

We live in a generation where answers are at our fingertips... literally. We can find the answer to almost anything within minutes…. but there are life questions that the Internet can’t always answer. Like, How can I get better from this illness I’m suffering? Or I’m struggling to understand why my friends aren’t so friendly to me anymore? These are real questions that only God can answer and in His time.

Spend some time this week thinking of some trivia questions you’ve always wanted to know the answers to. (For example, how deep can a humpback whale swim before taking a breath? Or how many people can fit in the Sistine chapel?)... make a list of 8-10 questions and then look the answers up with your families. It was good to have immediate answers, right?!

Then, share some questions you have with your family that God can only answer. Ask your children if they have any questions for God. Have a special prayer time with your families asking God those questions. Be sure to thank God for his trustworthiness to answer these questions in his perfect time.

9.19 Family Experience Live!

This week in our FAMILY EXPERIENCE LIVE video, we continue our series, WISE! We learn that WE CAN ASK GOD FOR THE RIGHT WORDS and hear a story about a time when gave King Solomon just the words he needed after two women came to him with a big problem!

Family Worship Activity:
Each person will need a paper plate and a marker. Direct your family to place the plate on their heads. During the activity they cannot take it down to look at their picture. It has to stay in place. Have them use a pen/pencil to draw…
Give these commands:
1. Draw a house.

2. Draw a sun in the sky.

3. If you haven’t already, put a chimney and windows on the house.

4. Draw a line where the ground should be.

5. Add flowers coming up from the ground.

6. Place a happy face on the sun.

7. Draw a tree on the side of the house.

8. Add a person to the scene under the tree

9. Now, let everyone look at their artistic creations! It is always silly to see how the scenes turn out. Ask a few questions. Was it difficult to know where to put the objects? What was the hardest part about drawing these pictures? What would have made it easier?

Play a second round. Choose partners. Let one person be the artist and the other gets to represent “Gods Hands.” It’s a pretty important role!
Repeat the process and read the instructions aloud. The artist will still draw the objects on the plate, but this time they will have “God’s Hands” to direct and assist them. The helper can use their hands to place the marker in a good spot on the plate, or to shape the objects in an appropriate manner.

Once the eight steps are competed for the second time, compare the two finished scenes. What method was easier? Did it help to have someone who could see the whole picture guiding the artist? Was it hard to give some control over to the helper?

God’s hands are always reaching out for us. He loves us. He cares for us. We can trust Him to pick us up when we are feeling sad, clap for us when we are choosing the right, wipe away our tears, and point out the way we need to go. God can always be trusted!

Craft finger puppets-

Family Worship Activity:
Pretend play- use your finger puppets (see above craft) and retell the story of Esther.
See Esther 8 as a narrative guide (or any Queen Esther book you have on hand). (Fun note- You can add noise makers for whenever Hamans name is said.. or pretend royal music for when the king or queen is mentioned. Applauds/“hallelujahs” for Esther’s success. The more creative and fun you make it, the more you children will remember and retell).
Make the connection that God had a plan for Esther's life that she did not know at the time. It took bravery and courage for her to move forward.... God has big plans for you too! God will help you be brave when it’s time to take a scary step forward.
