Rise & Shine - Week 5

On a farm, life has a daily rhythm (for plants, animals, and people, too). “Life” is what this series is all about, because we’re talking about Easter and Jesus’ triumph over death! In this five-week series, our kids will explore the stories leading up to and following Easter Sunday. Together, we’ll discover we can stick with Jesus even when our days are dark, and that because Jesus is alive, we can spend our days meeting with him, trusting he’s there for us, and sharing his love — not just today, but every day!

DISCIPLE:

Read John 21:1-17 together. Saying I love you and acting like you love someone are two different things. Jesus was showing the difference. Jesus showed us he loved us by dying on the cross and rising again. Now Jesus was telling Peter to show that he loved Jesus by taking care of others.

Show a video about farm vehicles and machines. Talk about how each helps farmers with

their work. Farmers use various equipment to help them do tasks around the farm. As you might have noticed, they’re not just little wheelbarrows and wagons. Some of these are heavy-duty equipment!

When it comes to the task of sharing God’s love with others, we can do better than little wheelbarrows and wagons — meaning, we can do more than just the bare minimum. We can share God’s love by actually doing some heavy lifting . . . by caring for them!

How do we start taking care of someone else?

What are questions we could ask them?

Jesus did the same for Peter by helping him cast off that giant burden he had been carrying around since denying Jesus. Then he invited him to do the same for others.

 

Pray: Jesus, thank you for taking such good care of me. Remind me that I can use my hands and feet to help others. Help me to see those who need help and give me courage to help them. Give me courage to share your love with them. Amen.

DISCUSS:

  • Why do you think the disciples were fishing instead of waiting for Jesus?

  • What did Peter do when he recognized Jesus on the shore? Why would he do that? 

  • When Jesus tells Peter to feed his sheep, what is he asking Peter to do?

  • Read John 10:4. Who is the shepherd and who are the sheep in this verse?

  • Can you think of a time someone shared God's love with you? What did they do or say?

  • What is one way you can share God's love with someone?

  • When we share God's love, God's love spreads. Where is a place you can spread God's love?

DISCIPLE:

Read Luke 24:13-35 together. This story tells us that even when Jesus was right there in front of their eyes, people didn’t recognize Jesus. We don’t know if it’s because Jesus looked different after he came back to life or it’s because they simply couldn’t believe that Jesus was alive again. In any case, when we open ourselves up to the truth that Jesus is always there, then we’ll begin to notice him everywhere!

 

Go on a nature walk with your family this week to enjoy outdoors and identify how nature speaks of God’s splendor and presence. Jesus is everywhere! And sometimes, we feel the closest to Jesus outside in nature.

ASK....

What do you notice? What do you hear? What do you feel and smell?

How does nature help us recognize Jesus?

How do other people help us recognize Jesus?

How does God’s word help us recognize Jesus?

 

Pray: Jesus, thank you for reminding me that you are all around. Your creation, nature, and everything around us tells of your beauty, creativity, and joy. Thank you for being there for me every day. Amen.

DISCUSS:

  • What were the people on the road to Emmaus talking about when Jesus came up to them? 

  • Why do you think the people on the road to Emmaus didn't recognize Jesus?

  • How did they know it was Jesus in the end?

  • Read Psalm 23. Based on all of the action words that describe what the Lord does for us, why do you think Jesus is called the good shepherd? 

  • Why do you think it could be hard for us to remember that Jesus is always there for us?

  • Name something that you can hold in your hands that helps you remember Jesus is here with you. 

  • Name something bigger than your house that helps you know Jesus is always there for you.

DISCIPLE:

Read John 20:19-31 together. Thomas and all the disciples were overjoyed that Jesus was back with them. Jesus made sure all his friends got to see him with their own eyes!

 

(Tell a story about a friend you cherish (or take turns telling about your friends). Why is that friendship so important to you? How do you know that friend will always be there for you?)

 

In our story today Jesus physically appeared to his friends to comfort them when they were sad, and to tell them that he would send the Holy Spirit to always be with them.

 

Even though Jesus isn’t physically with us today, we have the same Holy Spirit with us when need comfort. When we are scared or lonely, we can pray to Jesus telling him how we feel, and the Holy Spirit will give us comfort and peace in our bodies. Another way that we can meet with Jesus is through other people.

Even though we don’t see Jesus, we can trust that he’s there and wants to hear from us. But we have to make the effort to meet with him. Jesus loves us so much that he loves being with us, and loves taking great care of us. I can meet with Jesus every day!

 

If you were spending time with a great friend and wanted to get to know them better, what questions would you ask them?

 

Pray: Dear Jesus, thank you for never being too far from us. You are always standing by and ready to meet with us. Help us to spend more time with you. Thank you for everything you have done. Amen.

Wow! Isn’t that wonderful news? Jesus is not dead! He is alive! He is not in a tomb, he is with us always!

Play ”God’s Wonderful Surprise” from the Jesus Storybook Bible. Start at 0:45 seconds. As it says in the story we just heard, Jesus defeated death! And if he can do that, he can do anything! Have your kids write or draw personal prayers on a construction paper cross.

 

Pray: Jesus, thank you for watching over me. I am so glad that you are alive and living in our hearts. Help me to share this good news with all who need to hear it. Because you’re alive today and every day! Amen.

  • What were Jesus' last words on the cross?

  • How did the people who saw Jesus die know that he really was the son of God?

DISCIPLE:

Read Matthew 26:31-35 together. Just like Jesus said, Peter pretended he did not know him and lied about his relationship with Jesus. Peter’s day had just become very dark . . . although it was nothing compared to what would happen to Jesus.

Would Peter have suffered the same fate as Jesus if he had told the truth? Maybe. All we know is that Peter was filled with regret that he didn’t stick by or stick up for Jesus when his friend and Savior was going through the darkest day of all.

Sticking with Jesus means to trust him even when you don’t see any immediate results. But if you keep at it, you will find that Jesus will come through for you. What are some things that comfort you when your day is dark? . . . like when you feel scared or sad?

Maybe it’s a favorite toy or blanket, a trusted friend or family member, praying to God, a nightlight, and other things.

 

Pray: Jesus, thank you for always being with me. Even when things are dark, remind me that I can stick with you because you know what to do and you know everything about me. Amen.

  • What did Jesus predict Peter would do? 

  • How did Peter respond to Jesus' prediction? 

  • Once Jesus' words came true, how did Peter feel? How do you know? 

  • Read Philippians 2:9-11. What happened because Jesus stuck with God's plan even though it was very hard?

  • Think of a time when you had a dark day and things did not look like they would turn out well. How do you know Jesus stuck by you during that time? 

  • What are real ways you can stick with Jesus?

  • How do you know sticking with Jesus is a good choice?

Jesus can change anything. That’s right, anything. That doesn’t mean Jesus will change anything every time you ask for it. Jesus knows what’s best for us, and sometimes the best thing is to not give us what we want. But that doesn’t mean he can’t!

Think about one thing in your life that you want to ask Jesus to change. Then, have your family members write or draw a picture to represent that change you’d like to see.

Pray: Dear God, thank you for Jesus, who can change anything. Help us to remember that you have the power to transform both big and small things . . . even impossible things. Start the change with us, and help us to go out and make the kinds of changes in our world that let others know how awesome you are! Amen.

Have you ever heard the saying, "Day by day nothing changes, but suddenly everything is different?" 

  • For example, fingernails grow two to three times faster than your toenails. I bet that you have never felt your fingernails or your toenails growing. 

  • We don't always notice the change happening around us, but it is definitely happening. But Jesus changes how we see things.

  • What are some things that we don't notice changing until they have changed? As a family, write or draw your answers on a sheet of paper.

Pray: Dear God, thank you for your miracle-working power in the Bible story we heard today. Thank you that you miraculously change the way we see things, too. We pray that you help us to see the world and people around us like you do. Help us to be the change that helps change others to be more like you. Amen. 

 

DISCUSS:

  • What question did the disciples ask Jesus as they passed by the blind man? Why do you think they asked this question?

  • What did Jesus do when he saw this blind man? How does this show us how we should respond to people in need?

  • In what ways were the religious leaders who saw or heard about this miracle, "blind"?

  • Ephesians 5:13 says that everything that the light touches also becomes a light. What do you think that means? 

  • How do you know God is with you even though you can't see God?

  • What does it mean to live in the light and not darkness? 

  • Can you think of one way Jesus challenges and changes our way of seeing and thinking?

DISCIPLE: Read John 4:5-42 together. 

Have your family write one thing they wish they could change about something that happened in the past. This can be something personal or something historical. If you could choose anything, what would you change? 

Maybe this change you make to the past would make your life or even this entire world better. But the fact of the matter is, we can't change what's already happened. No matter how painful or embarrassing it might have been, our past is a part of us. 

However, that doesn't make us any less lovable to God! God sees past our past and loves us so much anyway. Our past doesn’t change God’s love for us.

 

Pray: Dear God, thank you for your never-changing love for us! In a world where everything changes, we feel safe and secure knowing your love for us remains the same, no matter what we might have done in the past. Help us to continue to transform to be more like you. Amen. 
 

DISCUSS:

  • What did Jesus ask the Samaritan woman? 

  • What convinced the woman that Jesus was really the savior?

  • What did the Samaritan woman do after her encounter with Jesus at the well? 

  • Read Romans 5:8. How does this verse show us that today's Big Idea is true? 

  • Why might we find it hard to talk to God about our mistakes?

  • What can we do to remind ourselves that God's love doesn't change?

  • What helps you to keep moving forward (to forget about your past and keep trying)?

We change when we know who God is. Change can feel good and exciting, and it can also feel stressful or scary. The changes that occur in us because of knowing God are always good changes, even if they feel new and even difficult to do. Have your family write or draw one thing they hope to change in their lives as a prayer to God. 

Pray: Dear God, we are so thankful that we change when we know who you are. You take our sadness and give us joy. You take our fear and give us courage. You take our weakness and give us strength. Keep changing us so that we can be more and more like Jesus! Amen

Each week, we’ll focus on one of Jesus’ teachings from the Sermon on the Mount as we learn "how to" make a difference, love our enemies, share with others, and pray.

DISCIPLE:

Read Matthew 6:5-15 together.

Talk with your family about how there are different positions people can pray in. There are so many different ways we can pray! Some of us may have grown up thinking that we always have to bow our heads, close our eyes, and clasp our hands when we pray. That’s a great position to be in especially if we get easily distracted!

The Bible actually shows us that there are many ways to pray to God. We can lift our eyes up as if talking to God (John 17:1).

We can bow or kneel down (Psalm 95:6).

We can stretch our arms out wide (1 Kings 8:22-23).

We can even be standing, laying down, sitting, walking, singing, or leaping for joy!

Choose a way you’d like to pray right now, and thank God for the gift of being able to communicate with God! Then pray with your family.

  • Why did Jesus want people to go into a quiet place to pray?

  • What are some things Jesus encourages us to pray for?

  • What does 'forgive us our debts' mean? 

  • Read Psalm 32:5-6. What kinds of things is the author of this psalm praying about? 

  • If you could ask God any question right now what would it be? 

  • The Bible tells us God knows what we need before we ask. Then why do you think we still pray?

Read Matthew 6:1-4 together.

Have you ever wondered about what we can share with others?

Start by looking at what you have. You have a place to live, food to eat, clothes to wear, toys to play with, things to learn, people who take care of you.

What else can you think of?

Now, how can you share any one of these things with someone else?

Next let’s think about your interests, your gifts . . . you know, the things you are naturally good at. We are all born with these things!

Can you name at least one ability God has given you?

What can you do with this ability to help someone else?

Practice thanking God often for all of these things and remember that what God wants most of all is for us to think of others and not just ourselves.

Jesus taught us how to share with others. And, when it feels tough sharing things you love with others, remember that God shared Jesus with you, and Jesus shared everything he had for us.

  • Which way of giving and doing good deeds was Jesus warning people not to do?

  • Read Matthew 6:2. What happens when people do good but then "announce it with trumpets"? What reward is Jesus talking about?

  • What do you think it means to "not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing"?

  • Read Psalm 20:7. What would be a modern-day version of the "chariots" and "horses" people trust instead of God? 

  • Why do you think it is so important that we share with others? Why is our motive for sharing also important?

DISCIPLE:

Read Matthew 5:43-48 together. 

Have your kids take a piece of construction paper, fold it in half, and tear out the shape of a

heart. Have them then tear the heart into four pieces, then swap hearts with a family member. As kids patch up their “heart” with tape, have them share their thoughts on the questions below.

What are some ways we get our hearts broken?

Can you think of a time someone said something to upset or hurt you?

What about a time when you did that to someone else?

What can we do to patch things up with someone you don’t get along with?

We cannot control how others treat us, but we can always control how we treat others. Especially because we don’t know the whole story, sometimes. It’s possible that the people who broke our hearts got their hearts broken, too.

God reached out to us and loved us long before we loved God back. Jesus taught us how to love our enemies by loving all of us!

Have you ever wondered how salt works and how it makes a difference in how food tastes? Here’s a quick rundown of how to use salt:

  • Use it to up the natural saltiness of a food.

  • Add a sprinkle to bitter things to tone down the bitterness.

  • Add a pinch to sweet things to balance out sweet flavors.

So, what do salt and people have in common? Well, they both have the power to make a difference! That’s kind of weird, but if you think about it, it’s kind of cool! Just like how salt can affect other tastes, people can affect other people. Through Jesus, we have the power to influence the people around us with God’s love. After all, Jesus taught us how to make a difference!

  • What did Jesus mean when he said that we are the "salt of the earth" and the "light of the world"?

  • What happens if salt loses its flavor or a light is hidden?

  • What is the purpose of letting our light shine?

  • As we grow up, parents and other trusted adults can show us what it looks like to love God — like our team of leaders here at church, who are always ready to help you learn and grow!

  • Even though Jesus was God's son and he seemed to have been able to do fine on his own for three days, he still obeyed his parents. 

  • God gives us parents, family members, and teachers to help us grow, and our job is to listen to them. That is one way we can love God with our actions.

Read Luke 2:41-52 to your family. Jesus showed everyone around him that day you can never be too young or too old to show how much you love God.
Pray: Dear God, I know that my actions say so much about what matters most to me, and I want to show that it's you! Help me to love you with both the things I say and the things I do. Thank you for putting people in my life that help me grow my love for you. Amen.

DISCIPLE: Have your kids write or tell you a time that someone did something to keep them safe. Have the kids tell you how they felt when that moment happened. Here are some helpful examples:

When your parents keep an eye on you when you're swimming

When your uncle fixes your bike and gives you a helmet to wear

When your grandma reminds you to put on your seatbelt 

When your coach reminds you to drink water

How did you feel when that moment happened?

  • Did you feel loved, warm, or safe? Did you feel comforted?

  • How does it feel to be important to someone else? Just like you felt cared for when someone did something to keep you safe, you can experience the love and kindness of God because God is always caring for you. God does good things for us for our good . . . like sending us Jesus! Even if we haven't always felt safe, we are safe because God is always with us. God guides us to safety.

Read Matthew 2:13–23 to your family. God sent an angel to keep Jesus and his family safe when they didn't even know they were in danger! In the same way, God watches over us and can guide us to safety and protection when we're scared, in danger, or confused.


Pray: Dear God, you are my guide and my protector. You led Jesus and his parents to safety in Egypt, keeping them from harm until the time was right. Thank you for watching over me, guiding me to safety, and putting people in my life who do that for me, too. Amen.

DISCIPLE: 

Read Luke 2:41-52. Jesus loved and obeyed his parents. The Bible tells us he was a good son and he grew up strong and wise. What happened at the temple shows us that Jesus wanted to be with, learn more about, and talk to people about God all the time. Because he loved God so much, he wanted everyone to do the same! 

People travel the world for different reasons. There is so much to see and experience out there

and one place you can definitely see that is at international museums.

Famous museums like the Musée du Louvre in France, the Uffizi Gallery in Italy, the Metropolitan

Museum of Art in New York, the Museo Nacional Del Prado in Madrid, and so many more carry

both historical and modern masterpieces for people to enjoy.

Let’s imagine we are in one of these galleries right now, and we came across this work of art in

an exhibit. This 1860 painting is titled, “The Finding of the Saviour in the Temple.”

Show  your family this painting and discuss the following.... How would you describe this painting?

What do you think Mary and Joseph are saying to Jesus? What might the people sitting there be thinking? Do you have any theories about what’s happening in the background?

Did you know that the artist, William Holman Hunt, traveled to Jerusalem to do research for six

whole years? He studied what the people from that region looked like and what their customs

were. He wanted to get as much information as possible to make his painting represent what

happened in that story as accurately as possible.

When we decide to know something or know about someone, it’s important that we learn as

much as we can about them instead of making snap judgments or assumptions.

Jesus came so the world could know God and his life on earth was dedicated to letting people

know as much about God as possible.

Pray: God, thank you for making yourself known through Jesus. We not only know so much about

you, but we can know you like we know our family and friends. Help us live in a way that helps

other people get to know you, too! Amen.

Let’s take a moment to pray for the world to have Jesus’s peace.

we now have a way to true and forever peace with you! Help us to share your peace wherever we

Read Luke 1:26-55. Mary was so filled with joy that she burst into a song about God, about how God has always done great things for people, about how God is full of love and mercy and will save them all! This was a really big thing to happen to Mary, but she trusted God. So instead of being scared or worried, she became filled with joy instead! 

What are some different ways people expressed joy in today's Bible story?

  • Mary sang a song. 

  • Elizabeth rejoiced in loud voice. 

  • Elizabeth's baby boy, John, jumped for joy before he was even born! 

What are some ways you express your joy? 

  • Maybe you sing in the shower, wear your favorite sweater, smile super widely, or skip when you walk. 

  • Remember, there is no single way to express joy. We're all made differently, so we all feel joy differently!

Share with someone next to you how you show your joy!

Pray: God, thank you so much for sending Jesus to bring joy to the world! Because of Jesus, we know that no matter what happens in our lives, being loved by you is the greatest joy we could ever have. Help us remember that every day is a chance to express this joy and share it with others. Amen.
